CCD
barcode scanners are products of good
acceptance in Point of Sale and
Inventory control
applications.
Principles
of Operation:
CCD
scanners operate under the principle that
a bar code image is projected into an
array of sensors. Light is emitted form
Light emitting diodes LED, usually in a
red color. light is projected into a bar
code and projected back, going through a
lens. The sensors, similar to those found
in personal video cameras, detect the
difference in light form black to light
bars and send the signal to a decoder. The
interpretation of the signal is converted
into ASCII characters that represent the
information codified in the bar code. Then
they are transmitted into the computer
through an interface (Key board wedge,
Serial or USB)
The
small depth of field is the result of the
fixed lens that can only focus an image in
a small-distance range.
With
Imager scanners, there has been important
advances in CCD technology. It has allowed
the expansion in the depth of field from
12 to 16 inches making these scanners more
competitive than Laser
Scanners.
Characteristics:
Depth
of field (from 0 to 8 inches) - This
allows a user to read bar codes holding
the product in their hands. Very useful
in boutiques, Jewelry stores, and
stores that handle small objects.
Good
scan rate ( from 50 to 200 reads per
second ). - Allows the operation to
have more customers per
hour.
Ease
of operation ( Aim and shoot) -
Training is trivial.
Some
Imager scanners can read defective bar
codes - Usually some bare codes are
washed out or damaged and generate
difficulties during reading. With
"stitching" technology make these
problems disappear.
CCD
scanners with trigger are used when the
operator has to manipulate the CCD
scanner and shoos only when
required.
Interface:
Keyboard
wedge - It is connected between the
keyboard and the computer. This is the
most usual and easy
interface.
Serial
port (RS232) - It is connected to the
serial port COM1 or COM2 of a computer.
Requires a power supply and software
that enables the port.
USB
port / It is connected to the USB port
of your computer that identifies the
scanner automatically.
Applications:
General
Retail - Groceries, Clothing stores,
Shoe stores, Book stores, Pharmacies,
Self service stores, Hardware stores,
Jewelry stores, among
others.
Inventory
control - Because they have a good
depth of field, they can be used in
warehouses and storage
facilities.
Advantages:
Excellent
resistance to Drops - Form the internal
structure, these CCD scanners are solid
state, without any moving parts. They
withstand drops and the bad treatment
that operators provide.
Price
- These are the most economical
scanners in the market and considering
their characteristics they replace
other scanners. They have the best
quality/price ratio.
They
are so economical that is ti better to
buy a new scanner than send it for
repair.
The
new Imager CCD scanners (SC2140) can
read codes up to 12 inches that make
them more competitive than laser
scanners.
Disadvantages:
Low
depth of field - As a result form the
reading technology, based on optical
nonmoving parts, there is a fixed depth
of field where the image can be
correctly focused into the sensors.
This limits the depth of
field.
Its
use is recommended in retail
applications.
Price
Range:
In
CCD Scanners the price range oscillates
between US$50.00 and US$150.00 depending
on their characteristics.
